How did majoring in English prepare you for your career?

I’ve worked in marketing since graduating in 2015, and I would not have had the job experiences I’ve had without my English degree. I learned skills that allowed me to succeed in work such as web design, proposal layout, social media, public relations and so many more—all categories that I’ve directly worked in since graduation.

How has majoring in English enriched your life?

The interviewing techniques that were honed during my time at The Spectator, in journalism classes and the UGA Tifton internship have given me the confidence to always ask questions to gain a better understanding of a variety of subjects from engineering to agriculture to sales to medicine.

What advice or insight do you have for VSU alumni and students interested in your career field?

Majoring in English opens a world of post-graduate job opportunities. It’s such a broad major, but it's so beneficial that you have the option to focus on specific tracks. I focused on journalism but went directly into marketing after graduation. It's because of my job and intern opportunities that I was able to land a job the month that I graduated. Take the time to work within your desired field and make connections.
